As someone who saw several games in SafeCo Field’s inaugural season, that playoff drought stat hurt the piece of my heart that resides in the Emerald City.
To have seen Griffey and Ichiro and look at that slump hurts.
Also, I don’t care. The worst NFL franchise is in Ohio. Take your pick.
I understand the formula, but please hear me out on the Sacramento Kings. Consistently bad, consistently irrelevant, and they are a professional sports team playing in Sacramento.
Just seeing this. I've been busy. For MLB, I nominate the Colorado Rockies. Entering their 34th season, they own:
- 0 division titles
- 0 WS titles
- lowest winning pct (.456) among all active franchises
- arguably the worse season ever last year (43-119, -424 run differential)
But there's hope. If they start winning 90 games a year (only need a 47-game improvement this year to get started), they could get to .500 overall by the summer of 2052.
I moved away from my hometown of Dallas, TX in 2008. At that time, the Dallas Mavericks had only been to the finals in '06 with their famous collapse. And the Texas Rangers has never been to the world series. The Stars and Cowboys did some good things in the 90's, but that feels a long time ago now.
Very surprised the Buffalo Sabres aren't at least honorable-mentioned. They just clinched their league-record 14th straight season missing the playoffs and there's roughly no chance they won't keep extending it.
Columbus Blue Jackets and Charolette Hornets are two consistently mediocre franchises that have barely made impacts on the postseason of their leagues.
I’d be interested in your thoughts on Timberwolves vs Sacramento Kings.
Historically, I can see the Timberwolves case, especially with the overall win percentage and lack of playoff success. But if we weight recent history a bit more, the Kings’ long playoff drought, constant resets and false dawns feel hard to ignore. Does the Beam Team era do enough to lift them out of the conversation?

Hah that’s fair!
the Charlotte Bobcats are up there with the worst all time
I am way late for this but the Washington Wizards have to be at least an honorable mention.
Yeah, they’ve been pretty abysmal!
The New York Jets won a Super Bowl in 1969, but for the most part they’ve been dreadful both before and since.
I know the Jets have won (1) SB, but I still don't think that disqualifies them from being worse than the Cardinals.

Haha great points!

Might just be me, but I love reading about historically putrid sports franchises. Great piece!
Haha I don’t think you’re the only one! Appreciate it!
Surprised the Rockies didn’t make the cut

Good shout! They probably deserve to be there too!

Yeah, definitely worth a convo. This was written a few years ago, so things have changed a bit. Timberwolves have been good!
Oh wow, five years ago! I’m new to Substack and it popped up on my feed.
colorado rockies
Oh crap! sorry, I'm embarrassed now... I thought this was going to be a bit on the Minnesota Vikings. Sorry.
put it all together and no city has it worse than san diego and it’s not even close
