Every fan loves to relive unforgettable sports moments. I am honoring that nostalgia with a Butterflies series called "Replays." Each edition will revisit a special sports memory, add context, and share commentary and reactions surrounding it.
Context
The 2013 iteration of the Iron Bowl was the most-watched game during the 2013/14 college football season. Alabama, the #1 ranked team in the nation, had won two straight BCS National Championships and was just two games away from playing for its third in a row. Auburn started the season unranked, but through several close wins, entered the game undefeated and ranked #4. The winner would play for the SEC Championship and have a chance to play for a National Championship.
Auburn had trailed, but rallied to tie the game with just over 30 seconds remaining. Alabama quickly marched down the field and had one second left on the clock to try and win it. Madness then ensued.
